Issue Position: As Kentucky's Chief Advocate For Civic Engagement

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2019

Rather than focus on issues that are the exclusive domain of the legislature, Carl Nett is developing a plan, in conjunction with members of the American Legion and the Military Order of World Wars, to bring a renewed focus on history and civics to the classrooms of Kentucky.

As President Reagan noted in his 1989 farewell address: "We've got to teach history based not on what's in fashion, but what's important: Why the Pilgrims came here, who Jimmy Doolittle was, and what those thirty seconds over Tokyo meant." The president went on to warn of "an eradication of the American memory that could result, ultimately, in an erosion of the American spirit."

The focus of Carl Nett's plan will be on instilling an understanding of the United States Constitution, the supreme law of the land, with specific deliverables required beginning in 1st Grade and continuing through high school graduation.

"As beneficiaries of those who have gone before us; as inheritors of the greatest nation in world history," says Nett, "we are duty-bound to confront the challenges of our time while securing the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity."
